Well, the listing fees are MUCH cheaper for items listed in your shop, so if you are selling lots of items and you're serious about having an ebay business, then a shop is a great idea. You can list all your pricey items in your shop, and put cheaper items into auctions, which will save you a lot of money in listing fees.

Also, and this is a key advantage, you get a domain name when you open a shop - so people can make a note of your shop name and revisit it when they want to buy from you again. It gives you an identity and a professional image.

Customers need to trust the person they are buying from and if you have a shop it suggests to them that you are a seller who is serious about their business.

You can also get business cards printed (try vistaprint, mega cheap online cards) with your shop's web address on to give out to people - and make sure you put a card in with every item you sell. I'm amazed at how few ebayers do this. I have bought items and tried to find the seller at a later date and couldn't because they didn't send me their card with my purchase.
